समझें — Concept
Direct speech (प्रत्यक्ष कथन): वक्ता के सटीक शब्द उद्धरण चिह्नों में। "He said, 'I am going home.'" Indirect speech (अप्रत्यक्ष कथन): किसी ने क्या कहा, बिना उद्धरण के बताना। "He said that he was going home." Direct से Indirect में बदलते समय तीन चीज़ें बदलती हैं: 1. काल में बदलाव (tense back-shift): Present → Past। Past → Past Perfect। Will → Would। Can → Could। 2. सर्वनाम बदलाव: प्रथम पुरुष (I/we) → कर्ता के अनुसार। द्वितीय पुरुष (you) → श्रोता के अनुसार। तृतीय पुरुष (he/she/they) → कोई बदलाव नहीं। 3. समय/स्थान बदलाव: today→that day, yesterday→the previous day, tomorrow→the next day, here→there, this→that, now→then, ago→before। ज़रूरी अपवाद: सार्वभौमिक सत्य (universal truths) का काल नहीं बदलता। "He said, 'The sun rises in the east'" → "He said that the sun rises in the east" (काल नहीं बदला क्योंकि यह हमेशा सच है)।

काल बदलाव नियम: Simple Present → Simple Past (is→was, go→went, writes→wrote) Present Continuous → Past Continuous (is going→was going) Present Perfect → Past Perfect (has gone→had gone) Simple Past → Past Perfect (went→had gone) Past Continuous → Past Perfect Continuous (was going→had been going) Will → Would, Shall → Should, Can → Could, May → Might सर्वनाम बदलाव (S = reporting verb का कर्ता, O = श्रोता): I → S (I → he/she), We → S+others, You → O, He/She/They → कोई बदलाव नहीं समय/स्थान बदलाव: today → that day | tonight → that night yesterday → the previous day / the day before tomorrow → the next day / the following day here → there | this → that | these → those now → then | ago → before | last night → the previous night
सबसे बड़ी गलतियाँ — Common Mistakes
काल बदलना भूलना: 'He said, I am tired' → 'He said he WAS tired' ('is tired' नहीं)
सार्वभौमिक सत्य का काल बदल देना: 'She said the earth is round' — 'is' को 'was' मत बदलो
प्रश्नवाचक वाक्यों में प्रश्न चिह्न हटाना और शब्द क्रम बदलना भूलना: 'Where do you live?' → 'He asked where I lived' ('where did I live' नहीं)
प्रश्नों में 'that' लगाना: 'He asked that where...' ग़लत है। प्रश्नों में 'if/whether' (हाँ/नहीं वाले) या wh-word सीधे आता है

टिप्स — Tips
पहले पहचानो: यह कथन है, प्रश्न है, आदेश है, या विस्मयादिबोधक? हर एक का reporting verb अलग है।
आदेश: 'said' → 'ordered/told/requested' + to + V1। 'Don't' → not to।
अगर reporting verb Present/Future tense में है (says/will say), तो काल बदलाव नहीं होता
