The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of the deaths of three workers in Tiruppur due to asphyxiation while cleaning a sewage tank without safety gear.

The NHRC referenced a 2023 Supreme Court judgment mandating modern technology for sewer cleaning and its own 2021 advisory advocating for the eradication of hazardous cleaning practices.
