The NHRC has taken suo motu cognizance of the death of three workers and critical condition of another due to asphyxiation while cleaning a sewage tank in Tiruppur, Tamil Nadu, without safety gear.

The Commission referenced a 2023 Supreme Court judgment on modern sewer cleaning technology and its own 2021 Advisory advocating a ban on hazardous cleaning without protective gear.
